After the British Raj fell in India, the Indian government wanted to protect and celebrate India's diversity by making Indian secular and they did this in spite of the fact that India was a majority Hindu country. Despite the large number of Hindus in the country, India prided itself for housing so many different religions and people, and it wanted to keep on being a country that showed how so many different groups of people could live together in harmony.  However in recent years, many politicians have turned their back on India’s diversity in order to gain political power-and the results have been devastating on Indians minorities and cultural identity.

There has always been religious tensions in India, and it’s hard to say where it came from. You could date it back to the 16th century Turkic invasions of India or to the British Raj or to the Partition but you still wouldn’t get a clear answer. What you can get from these events is that Indian’s feel very strongly about religious identities because of the oppression that they have faced due to their religious affiliations.  But it doesn't matter where the religious tension originated from, what matters is that there have always been groups of people who can detested India’s diversity and the BJP, the current ruling party in India, is one of those groups. 

The BJP has heavy roots in Hindu Nationalism. Hindu Nationalism is the idea that Hinduism and Hindu’s should be the ones shaping India’s cultural and political identities. The BJP has tried to downplay its Hindu Nationalism agenda, but the Party’s constant attacks on religious minorities in India, especially Muslims, can not be ignored.

The BJP has taken advantage of how tired Indians were of the country's political corruption and had used that to inflame India’s already tense religious climate. The BJP was originally looked at as the party that would fix India's corruption and set the country on the right path however the BJP’S political region has been characterized by corruption and fascism. 

The party’s Hindu Nationalism agenda has put India’s growth on the back burner and has instead set the country back decades in terms of inclusivity. The BJP has sighted many Hindu-Muslim riots by making many anti-Muslim statements. These riots have killed many and have stained India’s reputation on the global stage. The BJP’s leader and the prime minister of India, Narendra Damodardas Modi, has been accused of inciting  rioters and giving them a list of Muslim owned properties to destroy  during the 2002 Gujarat riots, before he was the prime minister.

The BJP and their goal of creating a Hindu Nationalist nation has been slowly destroying India; the country’s news is no longer reliable and there have been no improvements in the standards of living in the country. The BJP has made several politically demanding moves, including their controversial farming laws that led to massive protests across the country, the issuing of new currency that led to financial chaos, and the mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic. The party’s political failings have made them unpopular throughout the country however their Hindu Nationalist base is still keeping them in power. With India’s election season approaching, it seems like the future of India’s diversity and secularism is on the ballot and the results of this election will be felt for years to come.
