How Onlyfans Changed the Sex Industry

Sex work is a career field that has been around for many centuries. Some consider it the world’s oldest profession. The first recording of sex work as a form of income was in 2400 BC by the Sumerians. When we think of sex work, generally some people might think of prostitution. But this new generation of adults are changing how we view sex work.

When thinking about Onlyfans, people are most likely going to think of it as a site used to post subscription adult content. But Onlyfans wasn’t created for this purpose. Onlyfans was created in 2016 as a platform that allows talented individuals to gain traction and earn an income from their art. Now in 2023, the main use of Onlyfans is a place where people can post adult sexual content online in a subscription-based format. This changed how many sex workers operate.

Before Onlyfans existed, sex workers—like prostitutes—had to “work the streets” in order to gain clientele. This was extremely dangerous. Many murders targeted people on the streets because they viewed them as “lesser” people. The police often did nothing to help these women when they were targeted. The same communities that use their services would turn their backs on hundreds of women. Now with this being said, Onlyfans did not diminish the need to work on the streets—it only reduced the number of individuals that do.

Now with the development of Onlyfans—a place where individuals get to do their jobs in the safety and comfort of their own homes—the threat that came with working at night and on the streets is minor. This makes sex work a safer and more appealing job for a lot of people. This being said, the use of Onlyfans does have its own set of worries. For example, there is a possibility of being found by an online fan or by being doxxed. It also has bred acceptance of sex work and sex workers in the modern community.

This all being said, sex work is a valid and respectable form of income and the popularity of Onlyfans has only allowed for more of an acceptance of this work. Because of this, new generations are less likely to look down on sex work and degrade the people who choose this career.
