Sexual health awareness week is all about bringing insight, clarity, and empowerment to our sexual health and sexual pleasure. Sexual health is important for a myriad of reasons, but it starts with being able to speak up about pleasure. Whether you’re young or old, everyone can learn something from sexual education. Accessible and inclusive sexual education, awareness, and justice are crucial to putting the power and control of our bodies back into our hands.
This starts with empowerment. Empowerment means “the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life and claiming one's rights.” When looking at sexual health through that lens, it is about becoming confident in our sexuality, sexual processes, and communicating about sex so that health, education, and pleasure are never something that can be taken away from us.
That’s why this week’s focus is on sexual justice. This extends beyond just consent and communication, or our rights and respect. Instead, it’s comprised of four tenets as outlined by the World Association for Sexual Health:

Among these sexual rights are the right to pleasure and destigmatizing pleasure, as well as raising awareness and advocating for laws that help support this cause. Everyone should have the resources and rights to choose what to do with their bodies, from healthcare to pleasure. Ensuring easy access to uncensored, safe, and shame-free factual information is crucial to this endeavor.
Pleasure is a critical part of sexual justice.
