Many of us are familiar with (and possibly even part of) the decline in movie theater attendance over the past several years. With films becoming increasingly accessible to watch at home, and seemingly less costly—due to rising ticket costs and the uptick in available streaming services—fewer and fewer people opt to watch new releases on the big screen.

But, if you want to support filmmakers, their creative endeavors, and your local movie theater, this summer is a fantastic time to return to the cinema—and likely the best thing you can do to sustain their creations.

So, let’s take a look at the films dominating the box office so far this summer and what to expect if you’re looking to choose one for your next great watch:

Currently, this animated film is at the top of the list in box office success. If you’re looking for a family-friendly movie, this sequel is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. With important commentary on our digital age and its impact on younger generations, this movie is both accessible and intriguing for all viewers, regardless of age. Having premiered in theaters on June 19th, the film is expected to catch on in theaters through August.

Obsession

Second on the box office charts for the summer, this horror film provides a unique spin on the classic idiom “be careful what you wish for.” If you’re seeking out some horror, or want to support a new director, Curry Barker, for their first major film, it’s certainly the choice for you. Having debuted in U.S. theaters on May 15th, it’s best to find a showtime quickly for this one—it might not be showing in theaters much longer!

Michael

Coming in third is a biopic about Michael Jackson’s rise to musical fame starring none other than Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson. Fans of Jackson will appreciate this tribute to his music, and most everyone who walks into the theater will learn something new about the star’s upbringing or life. While it’s now unavailable in some theaters, you can stream the film on YouTube, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and more.

Since its May 1st release, this sequel has achieved substantial box-office success. This film is perfect for those who loved the first movie, as it once again features many of the same highly-acclaimed stars—including Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. Since it’s scheduled to begin streaming on Disney+ on July 29th, it’s best to buy your theater ticket as soon as possible.

The Devil Wears Prada 2

Backrooms

Another spectacularly successful horror film, Backrooms, currently holds the 5th-most successful slot at the box office. Based on director Kane Parson’s previous short films released on his YouTube channel, this movie is the young filmmaker’s feature-length directorial debut. Another great option to support a young director breaking into the realm of horror, it is expected to leave theaters soon—so snag that theater ticket quickly.

It seems that a pattern in the film industry is emerging this summer—the most successful films are coming in two main packages: projects from relatively new, young directors taking their stab at the horror genre, or sequels contributing to major franchises. But, with films like Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on the horizon, we’ll see how this trend fares.

Whether you went to the theater yesterday or haven’t been in years, you should absolutely consider taking a look at these widely loved films and re-explore the pastime that many of us seem to have stopped taking part in. After all, if you’re a movie lover, the best thing you can do to guarantee that the next release is a hit is to support the projects showing on the big screen. Your attendance at theaters (especially at a time where general rates are plummeting) is critically important to the success and continuation of film distribution. And, more so, your support impacts the ability of filmmakers and artists to keep creating

So, grab some popcorn, kick back, and support the artists at your local theater, because the stories we see and the stories we get to tell should always be valued.
