I was unhealthily obsessed with the online game Wizard101, and 16 years later, I am just as obsessed, if not more.
Wizard101 is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) where you play as a student wizard trying to save the Spiral, the universe of the game. The game starts with you filling out a short quiz to determine your magic class. There are seven different schools of magic, each with their own unique spells and strengths. You then are sent into Wizard City to begin your journey of battling enemies, raising pets, and exploring the 18 worlds the game has to offer.

The developers are still active and update the game regularly. When the game was released in 2008, there were only 4 worlds to explore. Since then, 14 more worlds have been added to the game, giving long-time players hundreds of new quest lines to complete and enemies to battle.
I have recently gotten back into the game for the third time in my life, and each time I come back to Wizard101, the game only gets better and better. When I first played at the age of 7, I only had the free version of the game. But this didn’t stop me from giving hours of my life to the game. I remember running all over Wizard City, completing the same quests over and over again. The charm of the game, the intricate spells, and the rich quest lines entranced me, and I could not stop playing.
In 2020 when the pandemic hit and we were all staying in our homes, scared of what might happen and craving human connection, I turned to Wizard101 for the first time in years. Despite the fear and uncertainty I felt from all of the unknown, Wizard101 brought me the peace and happiness that I struggled to find elsewhere. All of the graphics were the same from 2008, and the nostalgia I felt was incomparable. For the first time, I had adult money and was able to buy a membership that unlocked the entire game for me. I joined the community Discord and was able to game with others, getting that human connection I so desperately wanted. Wizard101 was somehow better than when I was a child. It wasn’t just the nostalgia that made me think the game was so amazing–my discovery of the amazing community elevated the entire experience for me.
After getting back into Wizard101 once again, I somehow love the game even more. I have recently been struggling with my mental health, and I needed something that consumed my thoughts to distract me from all of my anxiety and stress. Stepping back into the game after all these years felt like coming home and getting a big hug from a loved one I haven’t seen in a long time. I’m also sharing this joy with my boyfriend, and seeing him experience the game for the first time feels like I’m also playing for the first time all over again.
All of this is to say that I love Wizard101. This game has helped me in more ways than one and has shaped who I am today. If you have the time and the means, I highly recommend trying the game out. Even if you’ve never heard of Wizard101 and don’t share the same nostalgia that I do, I still think there’s a lot of joy to be had. It’s gotten me through some difficult times in my life and because of that, my heart will forever live in Wizard101.
