This past week, pop star Charli XCX announced the tour for her 10th album Music, Fashion, Film. Running only a few shows, Charli chose to focus on big venues in major cities. Riding the tail end of her hyper successful BRAT, Charli has developed herself as the main pop girl in our generation; she moves with intention and treats her work with a high level of artistry, especially her live shows. However, what makes this tour important, besides the limited shows: it’s not Charli herself, but the opener.

April Harper Grey (AKA Underscores) took to Instagram this past week to announce the cancellation of all her September dates for her Galleria tour and she will instead be joining Charli on her tour as her opener. Although her fans might be upset about the cancelled shows, people seem to understand, as this can be pivotal for a rising artist such as Underscores.

Grey’s infatuation with electronic music is rooted in dubstep music, Skrillex, and Kpop. Behind the glitchy bass and playful vocals, Underscores has been solidifying herself in the underground Internet music scene as a pioneer for a while now. All of her work is self-produced and baked in the personality of a glitched-out Avril Lavigne-esque persona, focusing on complex storytelling about heartbreak, living in a rural town, and armed robbery. This is shown in her 2023 album, Wallsocket, which placed her on the map as an upcoming talent and received critical acclaim from various online communities. Her fans admire Grey’s personality and vulnerability in her songwriting, making her a pivotal icon in the queer internet music scene.

Since Wallsocket, Grey has gone on to collaborate with artists such as Jane Remover, Danny Brown, and Yves, all leading up to the release of her most recent project, U. The project was a direct left turn from Wallsocket and focused on simpler pop-focused beats, coated in Grey’s intentionally chaotic production and bubbly lyricism. The visual aspects of this record stand out, too, inspired by malls, hotels, and empty spaces. It could be said that Grey is using U as a way to define herself as a pop girl in the mainstream, leaving no room for interpretation.

Considering how groundbreaking U is for Underscores and the underground genre, it’s no surprise that this caught the attention of Charli and her team. Grey’s music has been making waves online, and it shouldn’t be considered a rebellion; though, it sort of is. It’s a direct parallel of how queer Internet artists have found a way into the mainstream, proving that a once marginalized community can be launched into the spotlight without major labels. So hats off to Charli once again. She's never shied away from supporting artists who are redefining electronic music, especially queer artists pushing the genre in exciting new directions.
