Libraries Are More Than Just For Books: Discover the Hidden Gems Your Library Card Unlocks

“Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card!” Thanks, D.W., for that wonderfully true phrase. Libraries are often underutilized and underappreciated places. A lot of times, people don’t actually know what their libraries offer. We’re here to change that! Here are some resources your local library may offer, and a list of ways you can support them.

The main way to support your local library is by getting a library card, which will allow you access to their printed and online resources. Sometimes, depending on the town or city you live in, you don’t even have to go in person to get one! You can sign up for multiple, as well, depending on your city’s rules. Every time you visit or check out a book, either physically or digitally, you are showing the libraries’ investors and funders that it is still being used, therefore providing more funding for your local library. So check out and place holds away!

One of my favorite things that libraries have is digital library books. They come from an app called Libby or Hoopla, depending on which your library is partnered with, or possibly both if your library is fancy and has extra cool stuff. You can download this app onto your device and read books right there, or download them onto Kindle and read them for free anywhere. They normally offer newly released titles, and you can even request books or audiobooks. You think they’re gonna be those musty, dusty old books that not even your grandma wants to read? Think again! A lot of library systems are getting with the trends and adding popular BookTok books to their collections.

You can access their digital collections anywhere, but what about what you can physically get by going to a library? Some libraries have a “Library of Things” available at their disposal, which holds a collection of various non-traditional “things” that patrons can check out. Every library branch is different, so offerings available for lending will change, but there are some cool and even some wacky things you can pick up depending on what your library provides! Anything from a jigsaw puzzle exchange to telescopes to WiFi hotspots to handypeople’s tools to attraction passes (like museums, zoos, aquariums, or parks) to sewing machines to sports equipment to board games to instruments to video games to seeds to paintings to craft supplies to children’s toys to video cameras to cricut machines to podcast equipment to camping equipment to blood pressure monitors to metal detectors to electronics. They can have and lend just about anything. No streaming service? No problem! Libraries rent out DVDs, CDs, and on some apps, you can log in with your library card and stream music, TV shows, and movies!

Libraries are one of our last free “third-places,” which are “public, commercial, or civic locations separate from home (first place) and work (second place) where people can gather, socialize, and build a sense of community… foster[ing] relaxation, connection, and a sense of belonging.” So we should take advantage of them whenever we can. They can provide meeting spaces, quiet study cubicles, and even rooms for clubs and events. They even have free WiFi and public-use devices if you do not have a device to access it on your own.

Another cool resource libraries also provide are classes or events! These range from author nights to crafternoons to storytime to teaching a skill, a cooking class, or even meetups just to meet your community members. Some even have gaming clubs, karaoke, meditation, lectures, and life skills classes. A class that gets offered weekly at my library is how to use the 3-D printer they have on site. They walk you through how to use the Makerspace, and then they let you print out a little object to take home. They can even teach you how to design your own bigger prints.

The library is more than just a place to print something, fax something, or pick up a random book; it’s a place full of possibilities, with people who are trained to help you with whatever you need. So let’s learn not to judge a library book by its cover and start really digging into just what all our local libraries have to offer.

Libraries are one of our last free ‘third-places’...So we should take advantage of them whenever we can.
